Ministry to Children
The Children's Ministry at Peace Lutheran Church provides educational opportunities to children who are at the sixth grade level and below, and also coordinates infant, toddler and pre-school aged care during worship services and other church events. A focus of the Children's Ministry is the Sunday School, which takes place from 9:00 a.m. through 10:15 a.m. for children ages 3 years old through 6th grade. The Sunday School year runs from September through May. For the past few years, we have used the Firelight II Bible Learning Curriculum, which uses experiences and activities to get learners moving, living what is taught. Bible stories are presented in age-appropriate ways, while leaders add special cooking, art, science, games, and drama activities to enhance the learning experience. Our focus for 2007-2008 is on Wonder Stories: Learning Jesus' Miracles. Topics include "Wedding at Cana," "Jesus Calms the Storm," "Jesus Feeds 5,000," "Jesus Heals 10," and "Jesus Raises Up the Young Girl." Typically, we break from our theme for special units on Christmas and Easter. We also hold several intergenerational sessions throughout the year on topics of interest to children and adults alike. It's never too late to register children! We hope that your family will join us for what promises to be a fun and educational time of studying God's Word. Peace Lutheran Church is also active in an interdenominational Vacation Bible School (VBS) that is held at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Annandale. VBS is typically held for one week in July. A number of adult volunteers from Peace Lutheran Church, as well as teen helpers (rising 6th graders and up) and students (ages 3 years old through rising 5th graders), have helped to make this annual program a success. The Children's Ministry is also responsible for providing educational materials for pre-school children to explore during worship. Families are invited to select activity bags for their children to use as they enter the Sanctuary. Bags are available both in the narthex and in the corridor between the Fellowship Hall and the Sanctuary, and should be returned to the racks after services. Infant, toddler and pre-school care is also coordinated by the Children's Ministry. The church has a nursery attendant on staff to care for children age two years old and younger during worship services. Parents and other church volunteers watch pre-school children on a rotating schedule during services.
