The Lazarus Project's July Enrichment Program 2008

July 2007 Program Info - October 2007 Program Info

The Lazarus Project's July Enrichment 2008 at Village of Hope School in Ganthier, Haiti began much like the July Enrichment 2007, with a bit of confusion and a few anxious teachers. But it did not take long for the teachers and the students to adjust to the daily excitement of learning hands-on skills. Along with a few returning teachers, there were many new ones who brought their talents to share. Thirteen teachers, one Haitian and twelve Americans, taught nine different classes for two weeks from July 14-25, 2008.

Haitian Artisan, Duvale, taught METAL-WORKING. The students designed, cut and painted works of art made out of old oil drums. It was the first time they ever did this and the results were very professional. Duvale may have just created some competition in his profession.

Pastor Ron and Mickey Dingle, FL, taught the students not only to build SOLAR OVENS but also how to cook in them. The students took great pride in their workmanship and were able to cook an entire meal for everyone in the program.

Ryan Radke, Prince of Peace, VA, taught BASIC ROBOTICS by building kites, straw towers, paper airplanes, a simple transmission, a robotic dog and many other projects. The students learned physics while having fun.

Tom Lambiase, Prince of Peace, VA, returned to teach new students how to CROSS-STITCH. They created a beautiful cross design and got very creative by adding Bible verses and their names.

Still students themselves, Lan Dinh, a college student at U of Penn and Crystal Nichols, a senior at West Catholic High School in Philadelphia, taught the students how to CROCHET. They made bags, hats, a blanket and other creations using their imaginations.

Four art classes were offered to the students this year. Melinda Reidy, Prince of Peace, VA, taught the students how to repeat multiple images by stenciling and SCREEN-PRINTING on paper, banners and t-shirts.

Erica Radke, Prince of Peace, VA, returned to Village of Hope to teach many 3-D ART skills such as weaving, sculpture and mosaic art, as well as drawing and painting. The kids had many creative opportunities to work with their hands.

Maggie Garner, a high school teacher in Maryland, taught OIL PAINTING and PASTELS. The students created beautiful paintings using their new skills.

Marni Maree, Peace, VA, returned to teach the students to see better and to draw what they see. The students were surprised at their new skills. They also painted a new MURAL on one of the school buildings. They are proud of the beautiful garden they created.

Mother and daughter, Tricia and Milissa Gillespie, both teachers in Philadelphia, were able to go from class to class to help each teacher as needed. The Enrichment teachers really appreciated their help and valuable skills as professional teachers.

Our translators, Roberta's kids, were wonderful young adults who made it possible for us to teach.

Principal, Clovis Elias and the staff at the Village of Hope School were all very involved in running the July Enrichment Program. With Margaret Bollinger's wonderful cooking and hospitality and Pastor Larry's energetic leadership and driving skills, the July Enrichment team was able to reach many children and change lives. We are already making plans for July Enrichment 2009 and hope that you will consider sharing your talents with the children of Haiti.
