Project Boomerang

The mission began simply in July 2006. Create blank greeting cards for delivery to deployed Chaplains, who would then distribute them to the deployed overseas. Our troops could then add their own messages and send these cards to their loved ones.

The idea was inspired by Peace Lutheran Church's WRAP (Women's Renewal at Peace) group and then began to take on a life of its own. A non-denominational group of women began producing the greeting cards.

When the group began sending cards to the deployed in Iraq and Walter Reed they christened their effort Project Boomerang. They felt that the concept of the boomerang represented the path of the cards - blank cards sent out to our troops and completed cards returned to family and friends.

Strong positive feedback from Tom Porter, their contact to Walter Reed Medical Center, encouraged their efforts. Additional requests for cards followed, widening the mission.

Cards are made in advance for every season and major holiday. Thank you, thinking of you, and birthday cards are made throughout the year. The finished cards are completed using the Handmade with Love and the www.sharingpeace.org stamps.

The beautiful greeting cards are designed using stamps and recycled materials. New and used cards, magazines, stickers, and ribbons are transformed into works of love. The groups' penchant for using recycled materials resulted in the group being designated the "Scrappy Ladies."

The Scrappy Ladies meet weekly at a designated time. Their numbers vary as some "snow birds" migrate or other obligations divert them. Friends and visiting relatives occasionally join in the mission and the fun. They share their card making secrets along with triumphs, tribulations, and a general camaraderie. Some work at home or while vacationing, helping to increase productivity.

Productivity sometimes gets an extra boost. The Scrappy Ladies helped lead card making workshops during Sunday School intergenerational events at Peace Lutheran. The enthusiasm for the project bridges the generations.

Contributions by generous individuals and 3 Thrivent Financial for Lutherans grants has made this work possible. As of October 2008, over 4,000 cards have been distributed to our troops at home and abroad.
